Christmas Jewelry–What to Consider Before You Buy Jewelry Gifts

With Halloween behind us, now is the time to start thinking about Christmas jewelry. Who doesn’t love to get jewelry for Christmas? I have never disliked getting rings or a necklace as a gift anytime. And Christmas is a great time for that special gift of jewelry that the recipient might not be expecting.

There are two general categories of Christmas jewellery. There is jewelry that reflects the season like Christmas tree jewelry, and regular or fine jewelry given as a gift.

Christmas Jewelry

Brooches, necklaces, earrings, rings and even things like keychains that contain Christmassy pictures or shapes are big fun to get at Christmas time. Snowmen and things like reindeer are popular in this type of jewelry. Just like Christmas ornaments on the tree, Christmas themed jewelry dresses everybody up for the holidays.

Here’s something to keep in mind, though. If you give it as Christmas gifts, the Christmas season is over by the time your recipient has received it. Your gift recipient won’t be able to wear the pretty jewelry until next Christmas season. If this person is a huge Christmas fan, then it won’t matter as much. But for some people, getting jewelry that they can’t really wear for another year is just a little bit disappointing. If you’re going to give Christmas themed jewelry, try to give it a little bit before the day. Surprise your recipient with the gift a week ahead of Christmas or even just a few days before.

This way they can more fully enjoy it before it has to be stowed away until at least Halloween. After all, the stores put Christmas decorations out before Halloween now. Sometimes they start before school’s even in session for the fall. So I guess a real Christmas fanatic could start wearing those Christmas tree earrings sometime in mid-September if she really wanted to.

For real Christmas fanatics, look for specialty jewelry like Nightmare Before Christmas jewelry featuring Jack and other characters from the film. This movie is popular at Halloween too, so you could give this type of gift almost as early, if you wanted.

This kind of Christmas jewelry is especially fun for children. Children’s jewelry comes in all different shapes and sizes. You can find costume jewelry in shapes of reindeer, snowmen, Christmas mice and presents–just about anything you can imagine having to do with Christmas. This could be as simple as cheap strands of red and green beads almost like Mardi Gras beads. Kids love this stuff. Wrap some Christmas color beaded jewelry around a gift almost like a bow, and it’s an instant hit.

But you can give fine jewelry as well. A gold charm shaped like a Christmas tree can be worn on a charm bracelet or charm necklace all year long. Specialty jewelry, especially jewelry that people collect, is a good choice. Italian charm bracelets, pandora charms, add-a-bead jewelry and all types of collectible wear are popular gifts. It all doesn’t have to be Christmas costume jewelry or big, colorful pins. Think about the person you’re giving the gift to and that will help you choose.

If funds are a little bit tight this year, you can please a jewelry fan by choosing vintage Christmas jewelry. While some vintage jewelry is very expensive, you can go on websites like eBay and find people selling their old jewelry or their parent’s jewelry quite inexpensively. The key in buying this type of vintage Christmas jewelry is making sure that it’s in reasonably good shape for its age. If it’s chipped, yellow and bent it’s not to make a very good gift. It can be oldand show some signs of wear. But it needs to retain its vintage charm in order to make a great gift.

Personally, I would love to find a little plastic pin I had as a child. He was a reindeer and when you pulled a little tiny rope his arms and legs moved. I still have a Santa Claus like this that probably cost a quarter when it was brand-new. Something like those that could be found for a couple dollars on eBay would make a perfect gift for someone who really wants it. If you’re giving a gift to someone and you’re not sure if they’d like that kind of vintage Christmas jewelry, simply ask them. Bring up jewelry you remember as a child to spark a conversation about the subject. You don’t have to directly asked if they’d like the jewelry just like that. It’s but if you can find a piece of vintage Christmas jewelry that you thinks the person will like for a dollar or two on eBay, it would be a wonderful addition to a gift or a gift all on its own and might become the high point of that person’s holiday because it’s so thoughtful.

If you’re looking for Christmas jewelry, the most important thing to keep in mind is the personality of the person you’re buying it for. A Christmas tree jewelry brooch that’s as big as your face won’t be the greatest gift for someone who’s not so much a fan of the season. This type of jewelry is good front office exchange or when you have to buy a gift for someone you don’t know very well, though a tasteful pin with a Santa Claus or Christmas tree is a fairly neutral gift to give. And if the person is participating in a Christmas gift exchange, you don’t have to worry about a Christmas related gift being religion inappropriate.

Fine Christmas Jewelry Gifts

You can also opt to give fine jewelry for Christmas. It doesn’t have to have anything to do with the season, and in fact for most people this is probably the most appropriate type of jewelry gift. During the holidays, after Thanksgiving is one of the best times to shop for Christmas jewelry for the people you love. If your budget’s an issue you can hold out for the better sales that run closer to Christmas. But you do run the risk of those Christmas jewelry items being long gone by the time you decide to purchase them.

Since jewelry can be a high ticket item, if you know you’re planning on getting someone jewelry for Christmas months ahead of time, you really should keep your eye out at the time for good deals. You can purchase a Christmas gift in January and simply store it away until Christmas time. If you see something that catches her eye in March, purchase it and store it until Christmas. She’ll be amazed that you “remembered” the jewelry she admired months ago.

Fine jewelry makes an excellent Christmas gift for teenagers, too. They’re on the cusp between children’s jewelry and adult jewelry, so something like a nice watch or a birthstone ring in the gold or silver setting can be a wonderful Christmas gift to help them make that transition.

Whichever Christmas jewelry you choose, as long as you’re purchasing a gift for someone who does enjoy jewelry in general, you almost can’t go wrong.
